It’s Sunday night and the beginning of my final week of listening to my records. I only have 6 left. Another Jazz record, this is the third solo album from this great Jazz guitarist. From 1971 this is an original pressing on the Douglas label. This record with a gatefold cover is dedicated to his guru Sri Chinmoy and has one of his poems inside as on most of his records. Side one has two tracks one 7 minutes and one 12 minutes. These feature Mclaughlin playing acoustic guitar with Dave Liebman, Charlie Haden, Arito Moreira, Jeyyr Goodman, Billy Cobham and two Indian musicians playing tablas and tambura. These have the sound of a Raga with soloing by Liebman on flute and Goodwin on violin. They are both pretty good. Side two has 8 short guitar solo pieces with some percussion on a couple. He covers compositions by Charles Mingus, Miles Davis and Chick Corea as well as two originals. It’s hard to tell one from another but the playing is amazing. His fingers can really fly! In 1972 he would form The Mahavishnu Orchestra with Cobham, Goodman, Rick Laird and Jan Hammer. This is a used one I bought at CD Exchange in Mohnton. The cover is in fair shape the record sounds good on side two but side one is in poor shape. Another one to possibly trash.
