This is actually the first record I listened to on April 1st 2019 when I started this although I didn’t start this blog until July 6th. I was going to end this today after 7 years but I still have more records to listen to and write a blog about. Maybe I make it to Memorial Day. The 5th Dimension were a vocal group that had several hits in the 60’s. Led By coupl cane Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo Davis plus three others they had hits with two Laura Nyro songs “Wedding Bell Blues” and “Stoned Soul Picnic”. This 1970 release is one of the free records I got when I joined the Columbia House Record Club in the early 70’s. For a penny you got 12 records and had to buy a certain number in a year or two. I joined with my sister but I was the one bought all the records. The list of free ones to pick from was not very big so I got two Three Dog Night records, Led Zeppelin II, Iron Butterfly Live, and a Beatles compilation of their later songs with the blue cover (my sister got the one with the red cover with their earlier songs) and this one. This record has one big hit “One Less Bell To Answer” which reached number 2 ,one that always seemed to be playing on the radio back then and a minor hit “Save The Country” another one written by Laura Nyro. I had heard that one on the radio and liked it which is why I chose this record. Side one starts with the title track written by Neal Sedaka followed by “One Less Bell To Answer” a Bacharach/David song. Another cover, Dave Mason’s “Feelin’ Alright?” is next. A Jimmy Webb song and one by composer and arranger Bob Alcivar, father of Jim Alcivar of Montrose. closes the side. Side two starts with “Save The Country” followed by a medley of “The Declaration”, singing words from the Declaration Of Independence from a musical called “Bread, Beans & Things”, Sam Cook’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” and The Rascals “People Gotta Be Free”. The last track “Dimension 5ive” is an instrumental written by Alcivar. I never played this record much so it is in pretty good shape. It has been in a stack of records on a chair in another room. Many are destined for the trash others I bought just for one song. I think I will do a blog on some of them.
