Miles Davis-Live Evil

This live album consists of 4 long jams recorded at The Cellar Door in D.C. in 1970 and 4 shorter tracks recorded in the studio. The live tracks were all over 20 minutes were edited and pieced together from longer jams. There is no audience noise. The players on the live recordings besides Miles are Gary Bartz, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, John McLaughlin, Arito Moreira and Michael Henderson. These tracks are in the Jazz Rock and Funk style with most of the soloing on sax, guitar, electric piano and drums on “What I Say”. “Sivad” uses that weird monkey like sound as percussion. Not sure what that is. The studio tracks are more mellow sounding. This is a Record Store Day reissue from 2021 on teal colored vinyl with the original 70’s era record sleeves. I first heard this record in 1976 when a co-worker at the steakhouse whose name was Niles Standish or something like that, I’m sure about the Niles first name, played it for me one night. He was an older guy who was taking a break from college and worked there a few months. Sometimes he would party with the other workers after closing. One night I went to his parents house which was near my parents house and played that record for me. I really liked it and it was my introduction to the Jazz Rock fusion of the 70’s and got me more interested in bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Jeff Beck’s Blue Wind and Larry Coryell. Later he asked me if I wanted to see The Mahavishnu Orchestra at Madison Square Gardens in N.Y.C. as they had planned a trip for four but one couldn’t make it. I said I would go. It was an amazing concert and after the show they stayed in a hotel room. It was quite obvious all three were gay but there was no hanky panky going on in the room which had two double beds, maybe because I was there. Would not be the first night spent with some gay people but that’s another story.
