Born in The Bronx Laura Nyro released her first record in 1966. This 2 CD retrospective was released in 1997. She has written some great Soul, R & B and Pop songs. I listenedd to disk one that had the more familiar songs and the first six on disc two. The first five songs from 1966 included many hits for other artists. “Wedding Bell Blues” was the first hit by The 5th Dimension and one I always liked from the late 60’s. “Blowin’ Away” was another 5th Dimension single. “And When I Die” was recorded by Blood, Sweat & Tears while “Stoney End” was a top 10 hit for Barbara Streisand in 1972. The next six are from her second album and included another hit for the 5th Dimension “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Eli’s Comin'” a hit for Three Dog Night. “Timer” is another good one from that record. Four are from her third record New York Tendaberry from 1969 that I also have a CD of. “Save The Country” was yet another hit for the 5th Dimension and one I had on their Portrait album, one I got when joining the Columbia House Record Club in early ’71. “Gibson Street” and the title track from that record are also good. The final four tracks on disc one are from her fourth record from 1970. Two tracks feature the Muscle Shoals rhythm section which includes David Hood on bass the father of Patterson Hood of Drive-by Truckers. Duane Allman plays a short guitar solo on “When I Was A Freeport And You Were The Main Drag” Disc two starts with two songs from a covers record of songs from the late 50’s to early 60’s recorded with LaBelle. “Smile” is the title track from album number six from 1976. It’s an interesting track with a long fadeout of Oriental music with two koto players. “Sweet Blindness” is from a live record from ’77. I knew that song because it was on one of two promo records I got from the Columbia House Record Club in 1972 Heavy Hits and More Heavy Hits. The up-tempo “Money” with some Jazzy guitar is also from that record. “Mr Blue” track six on disc two is from her final 70’s album Nested from 1978. Most of the remaining tracks on disc two are from her final album from 1993. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1997 as she was working on this retrospective. She died months after it’s release at age 49 the same age her mother died of the same thing. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012.
