Les Nubians-Princesses Nubiannes

Sisters Celia and Helene Faussart were born in France but grew up in French speaking Chad in Africa. Moving back to Bordeaux France they started singing a cappella. This is their first release from 1998. A good CD with a mix of Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop and West African music. Really enjoyed listening to this CD. Great singing and playing with a little electronics here and there and lots of hand drumming. The songs are in French with lyrics printed in the CD booklet. I try to translate some of it with my four years of high school French, but have forgotten a lot. I know most pronouns and prepositions and some nouns and verbs but that’s about it. Comparisons can be made to Sade or Soul II Soul and in fact they cover a Sade song “Sweetest Tabou” sung in French with a break for some rapping in French. “Demain” is a nice Jazzy number. “Makeda”, with some scratching and flute, was a hit on U.S. R & B charts. The title track is also another good one as is “Voyager”. “Sugar Cane”, the only song sung in English, deals with slaves picking cotton. There are three short a cappella songs. The album got a well deserved Grammy nomination in ’99.
