While watching a news segment a few years ago about the resurgence of vinyl records they mentioned that the longest operating record store was in Johnstown, Pa. What! I’ve been going to Johnstown off and on for the last twenty years for their music festival and never knew that. The next time I went was in 2024 (I’ll be going there tomorrow for this years festival) so I was sure to check it out. The store was not my kind of place , mostly 45s and some 78s older stuff from the 40’s and 50’s and more modern music was very generic. I did find this 2024 Record Store Day limited edition of 900 pressed there. Recorded at the club near Chapel Hill. N.C. this concert featured 30 songs from the Garage Rock era of the 60’s. 12 of those songs are featured on this record. The Nuggets record came out around 50 years ago ( and was compiled by Kaye) and I bought it a few years after it came out. It was sold but I wish I still had it. Lenny Kaye and a band that includes Peter Buck of REM and Jon Wurster of Superchunk among others. Guest singers include Alejandro Escovedo, Don Dixon and Steve Wynn. They play “I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)”, “The Letter”, “Hey Joe”, “Time Has Come Today”, “Wolly Bully”, “Kick Out The Jams”, “Gloria” and 5 others. It comes with an insert with liner notes from Kaye and Sam Calagione, the owner of Dogfish Breweries, of Milton Delaware, who made the record. The record sleeve has photos from the show. I had a fun time listening to it and it seems the performers had a fun time also.
