This is one of the four Melvins cassettes I bought in the early 90’s. This is their second album from 1989. This vinyl reissue came out in 2014 paired with their next album Bullhead that I will put on tomorrow. Formed in 1983 in Washington they were influential in the Grunge scene. A trio in their early days original bassist Matt Lukin formed Mudhoney and was replaced by Lorax (Lori Black, daughter of Shirley Temple Black) with Dale Crover on drums and leader Buzz Osborne on guitar and vocals. The music on this record is Sludge Metal or Doom Metal (they would explore different genres on later records) with lots of heavy riffs. These are short fast songs (10 of the 16 songs are under 2 minutes) that are all pretty good. Osborne’s vocals can’t be called singing, he sounds like a more crazed Nick Cave or Chris D. Don’t remember playing this cassette, nothing sounded familiar. The title refers to Princes Ozma from the Wizard of Oz books.
