Now we come to Drive-By-Truckers one of my favorite bands. They were formed in Athens,Georgia in 1996 by Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood. Patterson’s father David Hood was a bass player in the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and later was a member of Traffic in the late 70’s.I have seen them in concert eight times including an intimate”unplugged” show in Baltimore. I bought Southern Rock Opera on CD in 2002 when it came out. It’s their fourth album if you include the live album Alabama Ass Whoopin’. This is a great record, the only one I like more is Brighter Than Creations Dark from 2008. This themed album touches on everything from Lynyrd Skynyrd and their plane crash,Neil Young,the South and peoples perception of it,and a bit about the band itself. I bought this vinyl copy in 2015. Put on any of the four sides and you won’t be dissapointed. They are full of great Southern Rock with thought provoking lyrics. “Birmingham”,”The Southern Thing”,”Let There Be Rock”,”Zip City”,and “Plastic Flowers On The Highway” are all classics. The closing track “Angels And Fuselage” has an almost funeral sound to it. My main beef with this vinyl copy is that the song “Moved “,a more subdued song and one of my favorites , was left off the record. At 94 minutes it’s a rather long record but they certainly could have fit it on the record.
