The third release from Beck and the first on a major label. I bought this on cassette in 1994 and really liked it. Since selling all my cassette tapes in 2013 I have been waiting for a vinyl reissue. Finally came out in September of 2025. This is a hodgepodge of styles with Beck’s often humorous lyrics. The first track “Loser” was a top 10 hit and brought him international recognition. There are Folk songs: “Pay No Mind”, “Nightmare Hippie Girl”, Hip- Hop: “Soul Suckin’ Jerk”, “Beercan”, Country “Whiskeyclone, Hotel City 1977” and the redneck lo-fi: “Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs” that begins with a couples argument Beck taped outside his house. “Blackhole” is an acoustic number with Beck’s laid back vocals. “Steal My Body Home” is a very slow song with Beck singing in a low voice that sounds like it’s played at the wrong speed, so I decided to play it at 45 rpm. The song sounds more normal at that speed. “Mutherfuker” has a Noise or Industrial sound to it. I may have had another tape of his and I did have the Sea Change record but sold it. Looking at my downloads I see I have 19 releases from him the latest 2014s Morning Glory. Maybe I’ll listen to them and make a Best of Beck tape sometime.
