This Mortal Coil is a collection of artists on the 4AD label.Released in 1984, this is the idea of Ivo Watts-Russell, the founder of 4AD records, was to get artists on his label to cover songs he liked. Contributions are from members of Dead Can Dance, The Cocteau Twins, Colourbox, and Cindytalk. Vocals are by Elizabeth Fraser, Lisa Gerrard, Howard Devoto of The Buzzcocks, Gordon/Cindy Sharp, not sure if that’s a man or a woman, of Cindytalk and Robbie Grey of Modern English. They cover songs by Big Star, Tim Buckley, Roy Harper and Wire. The music could be described as Ambient, Ethereal, Dream Pop, and Gothic. “Waves Become Wings: and “Dreams Made Flesh” were written by Dead Can Dance and sound like their work. The music is comparable to Black Tape For a Blue Girl and other artists on the Projekt label. There were two more releases by this collective of which I have the last called Blood that came out in 1991. I have never listened to that one either so I though I would put that one on also. I am coming to the end of this CD listening experience which will end on August 31st and didn’t want to take two nights listening to these. Blood came out in 1991 and again has covers by Big Star, Gene Clark of The Byrds, Spirit, Rain Parade, Syd Barrett, and Country singer Rodney Crowell. Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly, who were both in The Breeders at the time, sing “You and Your Sister” a song by Big Star. Other vocals are by three women I have never heard of. 10 of the 21 tracks were written by Watts-Russell and are mostly instrumental with voices rather than actual singing. Spirit’s “Natures Way” is a little too orchestral sounding and I didn’t like it. Martin McCarrick, of Siouxie and the Banshees, is the only artist that played on both recordings. Didn’t like this as much as the first. In 1998 Watts-Russell had another project called The Hope Blister with more Ambient and Ethereal music which I also have but decided not to listen to it.
