The Association-Greatest Hits

Another one of the first records I remember listening to and another band with hits from the 60’s. I think this was one my sister picked for her half of the 12 records we got from The Columbia House Record Club. This record was released in late 1968. Founder Terry Kirkman got his first musical experience playing with Frank Zappa in 1960. He later founded a Folk group that included Cass Elliot and David Crosby at one time. In 1965 he formed The Association with five others. I loved the vocal harmonies and production by Bones Howe who also produced yesterday’s 5th Dimension record. I remember these songs from the radio in the 60’s younger people may know these songs from movies or TV adds. Most of the songs were written by Kirkman and other band members. My four favorites on this record are “Everything That Touches You” which reached number 10, love the fade out, can’t get it out of my head, “Along Comes Mary” their first hit reaching number 7, supposedly about marijuana, and their two number one hits “Cherish” and “Windy”. All four songs have been running through my head. A third number one “Never My Love” was later recorded by The 5th Dimension reaching number 12 in 1971. “Six Man Band” an autobiographical song was new at the time and featured some Psychedelic fuzz guitar. Some really great Pop songs. The record sounds a little scratchy but not bad. No skips!
