Rainbow-The Best Of Rainbow

Formed by Ritchie Blackmore after he left Deep Purple in 1975 this 2 record compilation was released in 1981. This is a German import I bought a few years ago not at one of the Reading area stores I go to. Maybe the one in Newark or West Chester. Every album Rainbow put out had a different line-up with Blackmore being the only constant member. Ronnie James Dio provides most of the vocals, later replaced by Joe Lynn Turner. “Man On The silver Mountain” is the first song I heard from them from the first album from 1975. Three songs from the second album Rainbow Rising, one I have, are on here, the two long songs that are on side two “Stargazer” and “A Light In The Black” with great guitar by Blackmore as well as “Starstruck”. “Long Live Rock And Roll”, “Kill The King”, are from Dio’s last record as their singer. Ex Deep Purple bassist Rodger Glover joined the band for a few years and played on “All Night Long”, “Jealous Lover” “Lost In Hollywood” and “Since You’ve Been Gone”, a song by Russ Ballard and also covered by Head East. “I Surrender” another song by Ballard is on side 4. Most of these songs I have heard before, one I didn’t know, “Catch The Rainbow”, from the first record is one I really liked. Blackmore re-joined Deep Purple in the mid 80’s and re-formed Rainbow in the early 90’s. His next band was Blackmore’s Night with his wife Candace Night. I have seen them a couple times doing their Renaissance Fair type of show. He later toured as Rainbow with Night and more new players. Blackmore suffered a heart attack in 2024 making it hard for him to play and tour.
