Mercury Rev-The Delta Sweete

This is Mercury Rev playing every song from Bobbie Gentry’s first album The Delta Sweete from 1968. Vocals are by different female singers. With 8 self penned songs there are three Blues covers on here. The last song “Louisianna Man” was removed in favor of “Ode To Billy Joe” her 1967 hit single recorded before this record. They all sound good. I like “Sermon” sung by Margo Price. “Courtyard” done by Beth Orton, “Tobacco Road” covered by Susan Sundfor and “Reunion” by Rachel Goswell. The best is Lucinda Williams doing “Ode To Billy Joe” I like her phrasing on the vocals. The stand up bass makes me think of The Pentangle. Liner notes by David Fricke. I have never heard Bobbie Gentry’s original record.
