A legendary show at RFK Stadium in D.C. Recorded on June 10th,1973, the last night of a multiple stay there. Known as much for the set list as the jamming, the show is over 4 and a half hours long on 8 records. The first set starts with “Morning Dew”, usually played later in their shows, followed by many of their more mellow songs. “Ramble On Rose”, “Looks Like Rain”, “They Love Each Other” Box Of Raqin” and “Jack Straw” all sound great. Also a couple of their Country covers “The Race Is On” and “El Paso” are in this set. “Row Jimmy” from their latest album Wake of the Flood is here as well as “Wave That Flag” an early version of “U.S. Blues” that would be on their next record. The first set, lasting an hour and 40 minutes, closes with “Bird Song”, one of my favorites and 18 minutes of “Playing In The Band” with a great spacey Jam only marred by Donna Godchaux’s shriek at the end of the jam. As if I was there I took a 30 minute break before listening to the 2nd set which begins with 22 minutes of “Eyes Of The World” with “Stella Blue” and “Here Comes Sunshine” all from Wake of the Flood. Johnny Cash’s “Big River” and Chuck Berry’s “Around And Around” are next. This is followed by a 56 minute suite of “Dark Star”, with some of what would later be called Space at the end,>”He’s Gone”>”Wharf Rat”>”Truckin'”. “Sugar Magnolia” brings a close to this 2 hour set. Dickey Betts and Butch Trucks of The Allman Brothers, who opened the show, join them for the encore that turns into an hour long third set. Playing covers from Bob Dylan, Arthur Crudup and Chuck Berry they end with their traditional closer, a 30 minute suite of “Not Fade Away”>”Going Down The Road Feeling Bad”>”Drums”, with Kreutzmann and Trucks,>”Not Fade Away”, finally ending with “Johnny B. Goode”. A really nice box set that came out in 2023 with liner notes on the inside of the top cover and a sticker. A great recording although vocals are sometime too loud other times to quiet. The pressing is not quite up to their usual standards but still pretty good. One I ordered from Amazon. Forget what I paid for it, probably close to $150. It’s selling on Discogs anywhere from $200 to $300 now.
