Grateful Dead-Fillmore West March 2 1069

The last night of a four night run at The Fillmore. Songs from this run were used for their Live Dead album. These four complete shows were released on a 10 CD set in 2005. A 3 CD set was released containing highlights of these shows at that time also. On Record Store Day 2023 the complete March 2nd show was released on a 5 record set with music on 9 sides and an etching on side 10. This contains both the early and late shows. This was during the short time Tom Constanten was in the band adding his keyboards to the mix. I believe the best “Dark Stars” are from this period. The early show starts with “Dark Star”, part of a 60 minute suite of “Dark Star>St Stephen>The Eleven>Turn On Your Lovelight” that is the entirety of the early show. After a second set from The Sir Douglas Quintet and The Pentagle the Grateful Dead took the stage after 2:00. After Bill Graham’s intro they launch into “Doin’ That Rag” followed by 23 minutes of “That’s It For The Other One” then “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”, used on the Live Dead recording, and “Morning Dew”. They end the set with a 50 minute suite of “Alligator>Drums>Jam>Caution (Do Not Step On Tracks)>Feedback>And We Bid You Goodnight” ending around 4 in the morning. A great concert from their early Psychedelic and Blues and R & B period with Pigpen doing the singing on “Turn On Your Lovelight”, “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”, Alligator ” and “Caution”. As usual it’s an excellent sounding recording and dead quiet pressing. It comes with a four page insert with photos and liner notes by Jesse Jarnow host of a Grateful Dead podcast.
