Yo La Tengo-Genuis + Love = Yo La Tengo

A great compilation album from the duo from Hoboken. Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley are joined by bassist James McNew on these tracks from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. Originally released in 1996 I had this on CD. This reissued vinyl version came out in early 2025. There are 122 minutes of album cuts, alternate versions of album cuts, B-Sides, covers, soundtrack recordings and other rarities crammed onto these 4 sides of vinyl. With 30 minutes on a side you have to crank it up a bit but it all sounds very good. Liner notes by Ira explain the origin of each song. One record has songs with vocals the other is instrumental. Some notable songs on record 1 are “Demons” from the I Shot Andy Warhol soundtrack, an alternate version of John Cale’s “Hanky Panky Nohow” with Georgia singing instead of Ira, “Too Late”, a Wire song with a long guitar freak-out at the end, “I’m Set Free” the Velvet Underground song, a third version of “Barnaby Hardly Working”, and “Some Kinda Fatigue” with more great fuzz guitar. The instrumental side has some nice acoustic numbers like “Her Grandmothers Gift”, “One Self: Fish Girl” and “Surfin’ With The Shah”. The Ramones “Blitzkrieg Bop” is one Ira says they played when they were a wedding band. There are two versions of “From A Motel 6” different from the one released on the Painful album. The record ends with the 26 minute “Sunsquashed” with lots of distorted fuzz guitar, feedback, drone and other noises. A great collection from one of my favorite bands.
