Acid Mothers Temple is a Japanese band who play Progressive/Psychedelic/Space Rock/Krautrock/Experimental and other types of unusual music. Very prolific, they have released 40 0r 50 albums under various names since their formation in the late 90’s. Led by Kawabata Makoto, guitarist and keyboard/synthesizer player they have an ever changing line-up and guest stars. Every record seems to be a bit different. I have one of their CDs, which I didn’t listen to when I was playing my CDs, and two other records by them. This one is from 2024. Don’t think I’ve played this one yet. The title is an obvious reference to Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica and like that record this is more Experimental and Avant-Garde than anything else. The four tracks on side one are filled with weird noises, odd percussion and strange voices. Not what you would put on when friends come over unless you are all on LSD. The 20 minute Asoko Ananda on side two is a little more accessible. Starting off with some fuzz guitar and synthesizers and a Rock beat after about 10 minutes it evolves into more strange sounds making me think of Rodger Water’s “Several Small Species…” from Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma, ending with an almost Funky beat with more guitar and synths. I will want to listen to at least one of the other two I have by them before this is over. I believe they are more normal sounding than this one.
