This is a 4 record set with music on 7 sides with the 8th an etching of the cover. This was a2 CD set I had and bought in 2001. This show was recorded on October 16 1989 at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. It was the final night of a 5 night stand there. Songs from this tour that lasted from October to March of ’90 were used on their Without A Net album. Not my favorite period of the band as I thought they were past their prime at this point and I can’t stand Brent Mydland’s twinkly keyboard playing. I really miss Keith’s piano! That being said this is still the Grateful Dead and there is some amazing jamming on here. At under 2 and a half hours it’s a little short for one of their shows. The first set is the best opening with “Picasso Moon” followed by “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodelloo”, without the “Lazy River” coda, and “Feel Like a Stranger” with some great guitar jamming. Next is “Never Trust a Woman” with Mydland’s Bluesy vocals and a good organ solo. This would be one of his last tours as he would die in July of ’90, another victim of a drug overdose. After “Built To Last” and “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again” the first set ends with another amazing “Let It Grow>Deal” with more great jamming. The second set is a 70 plus minute suite that includes “Dark Star”, “Playing In The Band”, “Uncle John’s Band”, “I Will Take You Home”, “I Need A Miracle”, “Attics Of My Life” and a reprise of “Dark Star” and “Playing In The Band”. This includes about 17 minutes of “Drums” and “Space” that is present in every second set of their 80’s and beyond shows. Although I like the drum soloing the space is just too much noodling around and I don’t like it too much. This vinyl edition was released on Record Store day in 2024 and as usual it’s an excellent sounding recording and pressing. The box has a nice smooth almost velvety feel to it. I bought my album off of someone selling it on Discogs. It was selling for less than half the $100 price and a picture showed a spot on the back of the box where the shrink wrap had been exposed to some sunlight and had melted in one spot. I took a chance and ordered it. The first two records were fine, the third had a slight warp but played fine. The fourth record has a bad warp at the outer edge making about half of “I Need A Miracle” unplayable but the rest of the record is fine. The eighth side being the etching it doesn’t matter. With just unable to play about three minutes of one song I think it was well worth the $45 I paid for it.
