Abercrombie, Holland & DeJohnette-Gateway 2

Looking through my records I see I have some Jazz records that I haven’t done a blog on yet including 6 from Miles Davis. I thought I would make Sundays Jazz night. I will start with this one, the second album from the Gateway trio recorded in Norway on the ECM label. From 1978 there are 5 tracks on here. The 16 minute “Opening” starts with some very quiet notes on guitar and piano with some brushed cymbals. After a few minutes it turns into an full out jam with excellent guitar from Abercrombie in a more Rock than Jazz style with Holland’s bass and DeJohnette’s drums keeping pace. Than Holland does some bass soloing followed by more guitar and then some soloing by DeJohnette, ending as it began with quietly. “Nexus” on side 2 is interesting with lots of percussion and guitar sounding like a saxophone or trumpet. The final track “Blue” is a mellow piece with DeJohnette playing piano. “Sing Song” features Holland’s bass in a more traditional Jazz sounding composition. Not sure where or when I bought this one.
