Amon Duul-Phallus Dei

Amon Duul II came out an artist and musician commune in Munich Germany in the late 60’s. Two bands came out of there Amon Duul and Amon Duul II. Amon Duul were more political and community oriented and put out 4 records. Amon Duul’s first record, Psychedelic Underground, from 1969, was one I had on CD. It was mostly repetitive Raga-Rock with chanting vocals. I didn’t like it very much. This is Amon Duul II’s first release also from 1969. I bought this record in the early 90’s when I was living in Philly at the store near the Roosevelt Mall, It still has the $4.99 price tag on it. It’s a 1971 reissue on London’s Sunset Records. The first track “Kanaan” is one I put on one of my Rock and Roll Tunes cassettes years ago. It features an electric sitar and vocals by female singer Renate Knaup. It has the Psychedelic sound of Jefferson Airplane. “Dem Guten, Shonen, Wahren” has some weird vocals, in German. “Luzifers Ghilom” is percussion heavy with more strange vocals. “Henriette Krotenschwanz” is a short song with a marching tempo with Renate singing in an almost operatic voice, again in German. Most people know the meaning of the Latin title track which is 20 minutes long on side two. It starts with some spacey electronic sounds before turning into a full out jam with Chris Karrer’s fuzz guitar and Dave Anderson’s bass before a section with two drummers drumming backed by voices, screams and other sounds. The final section adds violin to the guitar before slowing down at the end. The record itself is in very good shape. The cover is glossy and has some tape on the back and spine. I have a great compilation of theirs to listen to yet as well as a reunion record from 10 years ago. Would love to find a copy of their second album Yeti that I used to have on CD but used copies of that go for $100 and more.
