For this Jam Band Night I chose the second of five live albums I have by The Allman Brothers. This early recording is from a three night stand at The Fillmore East on a bill that also included The Grateful Dead and Love. This was taped by The Grateful Dead’s soundman Owsley “Bear” Stanley also an infamous LSD manufacturer. These shows were 13 months before the ones used in their top selling At Filmore East release. Only two originals “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “Whipping Post”, both around nine minutes long, are played the rest are Blues covers. “Trouble No More” and “Hoochie Coochie Man” were on their first two records. “Outskirts Of Town” is a slow Blues with some organ soloing by Gregg Allman. The highlight of this double album is the 31 minute “Mountain Jam” a jam based on Donovan’s “First There Is A Mountain”, on sides 3 and 4. The split comes at the end of the drum solos. Electrifying solos by both Duane Allman and Dickie Betts with bass soloing by Berry Oakley. Originally released on CD in 1997 this vinyl edition is from 2023 on colored vinyl appropriately called orange sunshine which is what it reminded me of when I first saw the color.
