Jam Band Friday again and also Halloween night. Dicks Picks Volume Two was recorded October 31st 1971 in Ohio. I had all 36 Dicks Picks on CD, most were 3 or 4 disc sets, Two was the only single disc in the series and on vinyl it’s on three sides with an etching of the Steal Your Face logo on side 4. This is a numbered edition of 3500 made and came out in 2023. This is the entire second set minus the encore of “Johnny B Goode”. Don’t know what happened to the first set but these four songs are great. “Dark Star” on side one is excellent (but aren’t they all?), followed by “Sugar Magnolia>Saint Stephen” on side two. The jam continues on side three with “Not Fade Away>Going Down The Road Feeling Bad>Not Fade Away”. A continuous 60 minute set. A five piece band with just Jerry, Bob, Bill, Keith and Phil, since Mickey Hart had left the band for a couple years at this point and Donna Godchaux was giving birth I believe. The CD was originally released in March of ’95, the last one before Jerry’s death. As with most of these Grateful Dead vinyl records the pressing is very quiet and the recording is very good also. I have bought quite a few live Dead box sets in the last three years and will be putting on some more in the coming Friday nights.
