Friday night Jam Band time and I picked out this Allman Brothers 3 record set recorded from 5 shows in 2003. This is the final line-up of original members Greg Allman on Hammond organ and vocals and drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe joined by slide and lead guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, nephew of Butch Trucks, percussionist Mark Quinones and bassist Oteil Burbridge. This lasted till the band finally disbanded for good in 2014., with Haynes concentrating on Gov. Mule and Trucks with The Tedeschi Trucks Band. Some great songs both old and new and some amazing jams on these tracks. Put on any one of these six sides and you will hear some insane guitar work from Trucks and Haynes. Derek’s guitar is in the left speaker and Warren’s on the right. Warren Haynes sings the newer songs and Greg Allman the older ones with his organ hardly ever heard. 33 minutes of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” is broken up on sides 3 and 4 with 11 minutes of drums featuring all three percussionists followed by another 4 minutes of bass soloing. The solos on “Rocking Horse” and “Desdemona” with a Grateful Dead-like intro are out of this world. The recordings are crisp and clear with great separation, the records themselves, each on different colored vinyl , have a couple bad spots but they only last 5 to 10 seconds. This set is from Instant live which makes it possible to buy a CD of the show you just heard 30 minutes after it ends. I have three of them from an Allman Brothers show in 2005, one from a Phil Lesh show and one from Hall & Oates that I saw in Reading. This line-up, minus Greg Allman who died in 2017, played a 50th anniversary concert in 2020. Sadly drummer Jaimoe is the only original member still alive.
