Warsaw was the early name of Joy Division. The five bonus demos were recorded in 1977 while still using the name Warsaw. They are rough Punk songs sounding like other Punk bands of that time. “At a Later Date” is the best of them. The 8 tracks on side one and the first 3 on side two were recorded in May of 1978 and were going to be the first Joy Division album called Warsaw but the band disagreed with the producer who wanted to add keyboards to the songs. The album was shelved, with five tracks released on an EP from ’78 and others ending up on the Substance compilation album. Two songs “Interzone” and “Shadowplay” appeared on Unknown Pleasures the first official Joy Division album while “Transmission ” was re-recorded and released as their first single. “As You Said” from 1980 is the B-side of a single. I thought all the songs sounded pretty good to me. These songs were all on a record that came out in 2024. It’s interesting to hear how they went from a Punk band to their more Gothic and electronic sound in just one year.
