Atomic Rooster-Home To Roost

Originally released in 1977 in Germany this two record compilation appears to be a 1983 re-issue from the U.K. I bought this used at a record store in Pottstown in the early 90’s shortly after moving to this area from Philly. It has never been released in the U.S. and I have never seen it anywhere else. These songs are from their first three albums released in 1970 and ’71. Atomic Rooster was formed by Vincent Crane and Carl Palmer who left Arthur Brown’s Crazy World in 1969. Crane was co-writer with Brown on the ’68 hit “Fire” that featured Crane’s organ and Brown’s manic vocals. Nick Graham was hired to play bass and sing. Each of these records had a slightly different line-up. Palmer left after the first album to join Emerson and Lake. Graham also left for another band. Guitarist John Cann and a new drummer played on album number two. Vocalist Pete French joined for number three. These songs are great examples of Heavy/Hard Rock and Progressive Rock of the early 70’s. Really not a bad song on here. Understandably these tracks are organ heavy especially songs from the first album with no guitarist. Crane also plays piano on many tracks as on “Winter” a song from the first album with a nice jam with flute, played by Graham, piano and percussion in the middle section. Many great songs on my playlist: “Sleeping For Years”, “Nobody Else”, “And So To Bed”, “Winter”, “Broken Wings”, “Decision/Indecision”, “Devil’s Answer”, “Black Snake” and “Tomorrow Night”. The cover is in good shape but the record had a couple rough spots and skips but otherwise sounded good. More line-up changer ensued for the 4th album as Cann left to start his own band and French left to join Cactus with Tim Bogart and Carmine Appice who had been in Vanilla Fudge who played at my High School in 1969. A new guitarist was brought in as well as singer Chris Farlowe. The record Made In England was released in 1972 and one I bought in the early 80’s. A completely different sound, this was more Soul and Funk with none of the earlier heavy sound. This record was my introduction to Atomic Rooster and although it had a couple good songs,”Stand By Me” was on an early mix tape of mine, I sold it a few years later never having hear their better earlier music until buying this compilation album. Atomic Rooster was disbanded and re-formed a couple times last putting a record out in 1983. Crane, who suffered from bouts of depression, took his own life by overdosing on painkillers in 1989.
