Richard Thompson-Watching The Dark

A really nice three CD compilation of his music from his early Fairport Convention days to 1992. This comes in a Fat Boy CD case with a 60 page booklet. All three discs average around 70 minutes each. Each CD has three groups of three to seven tracks from a different period in his career, not in any chronological order. There are plenty of live and unreleased tracks. I listened to disc 1 and most of disc 2. Besides his distinctive low voice, he shows off his guitar playing skills on the live track “Can’t Win” recorded at a club in DC in ’88 and an unreleased version of the traditional “A Sailors Life” from Fairport Convention’s 1970 album Unhalfbricking. With Sandy Denny’s wonderful voice this version omits the violin leaving only Thompson’s electric guitar on the final jam at the end. Another standout from the 87-88 period is “Bird In God’s Garden/Lost And Found” from a record he made with Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser and John French. Two solo acoustic performances from ’82 recorded in NYC show his acoustic guitar playing on “Small Town Romance” and the traditional instrumentals “The Shepard’s March/Maggie Cameron. I listened to the first two groupings on disc two. The first group from ’78-’80 are songs made with his then wife Linda. Three tracks are unreleased versions of “For Shame Of Doing Wrong”, “Back Street Slide” and “The Wrong Heartbeat” in 1980 with a band with Fairport members Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg. 5 songs from the ’90-’92 period feature 3 more unreleased live tracks the best “Tear Stained Letter” recorded in Baltimore and another solo acoustic traditional song “Bogies Bonnie Belle” from a concert in Massachusetts. “Poor Wee Jockey Clarke” is another traditional song with Thompson playing the hurdy gurdy. The final 7 tracks on disc 2(which I didn’t listen to) are from ’74-’75 and are recorded with Linda Thompson. Disc 3 has songs from ’72-’73, ’83-’84, and ’85-’86 with many more great songs some of which I have listened to before.
