Terje Rypdal-Selected Recordings

This is :rarum VII from ECMs excellent :rarum collection. Terje Rypdal is a Norwegian guitarist who started recording for ECM in 1971. Most of these tracks recorded between 1971 to 1998 are more in the Rock vein than Jazz. Other more mellow pieces may be called New Age. Rypdal plays some blistering guitar on tracks like “Over Birkerot”, “Tough Enough” and “Chaser” which sounds like a Van Halen tune. Transition” is a short composition with guitar and a synth background. The nearly 14 minute “Silver Bird Is Heading For The Sun” and “The Hunt” from his 1974 release Whenever I Seem to be Far Away feature the unmistakable sound of the mellotron. “Double Concerto” is another mellow track with guitar and symphony orchestra. I really love this 20 CD collection from ECM. I’m glad no one bought it when I had it for sale in 2013.
