German actress and singer Nico (Born Christa Paffgen) was introduced to The Velvet Underground by Andy Warhol and sang three songs on their first record. Going solo after that she put out 6 albums and many live recordings. I had Chelsea Girl, Camera Obscura, Drama Of Exile and this live recording Chelsea Girl Live on CD The first two were sold in 2013. This was recorded at The Chelsea Town Hall in London in 1985 and released in ’97 on Purple Pyramid Records. Although a 5 piece band with bass, guitar, trumpet, drums and ethnic percussion listed in the liner notes I don’t hear much bass and no guitar or trumpet. There is plenty of uncredited synthesizers, piano and harmonium, however. Nico is playing the harmonium, an instrument she took up in the early 70’s, but not known who is playing the keyboards. Four songs from Drama Of Exile are on here “Purple Lips” and “Sixty-Forty” being the best. Three are from Camera Obscura, her last release from 1985, with :Fearfully In Danger” having an Experimental sound. The V.U. songs “All Tomorrows Parties” is sung acapello and “Femme Fatal” receives a long applause from the audience. The concert ends with her rendition of The Doors “The End”. It sounds very much like her live recording from the record 1974 made with Kevin Ayers, John Cale and Eno that I have. With her harmonium playing and distinctive monotone singing and vocal phrasing it’s quite unusual. In 1988 while vacationing in Spain Nico fell off a bicycle, hit her head and died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
