David Nelson Band-Visions Under The Moon

David Nelson played with Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter in the early 60’s. Garcia joined Nelson and John Dawson in The New Riders of the Purple Sage in ’71. Garcia left and was replaced by steel guitarist Buddy Cage. Nelson formed his own band in the mid 90’s. This CD was recorded live before a small invited audience in Portland in Oregon in 1988. Any audience noise was removed and overdubs were made in the studio. With the same instrumentation as the Grateful Dead: two guitarists, two drummers, keyboards and bass there are plenty of nice jams on the longer tracks. Obviously edited. the first track “Long Gone Sam”, written with Robert Hunter fades out after 10 minutes while “Snakebit” fades in and then out at 11 minutes. “Road To Armageddon” and “Visions Under The Moon>Penumbra” both over 8 minutes also have good jams. The shorter songs are more in the tradition of The New Riders Country Rock sound. They cover Bob Dylan’s “Absolutely Sweet Marie”. Nelson and Cage reformed the new Riders in 2005 for a tour which is when I saw them at either The Keswick Theatre or Penns Peak, I’d have to check my ticket stub to see which.
